
Jonathon is Nêhiyaw from the Sawridge First Nation, Treaty 8 Territory, and is Métis from Alberta. Jonathon grew up in the Friendship Centre movement with the Slake Lake Native Friendship Centre and Canadian Native Friendship Centre in Edmonton. Jonathon completed his doctoral studies at the University of Sydney School of Social and Political Sciences and the Conservatory of Music with his thesis titled “Indigenous Youth in Australia and Canada: A Modern Narrative of Settler/Colonial Relationships through Indigenous Rap Music.” Jonathon’s research is in the area of Indigenous research methodologies and research on Indigenous youth and hip-hop culture in Canada and Australia.
Jonathon is Two-Spirit and has done work within the national Two-Spirit movement and is a specialist on Indigenous intersectional approaches to Indigenous research and urban Indigenous studies. Dr Potskin is trained in Community Based/Driven Research, Indigenous Social Justice Policy, Indigenous Governance, Ethnomusicology, Metis history, Dance, and Music.

Creation of an International Indigenous Research Methodology that respected the lands of Turtle Island and those on the lands called Australia. The main thesis was the examination of Indigenous Hip Hop and the transfer in Indigenous knowledges through rap music in Canada and Australia. The main themes from the research were Indigenous Decolonization through Indigenous feminism, Indigenous Resurgence and Reconciliation.

thesis examined Decolonial Approaches from Indigenous academics and the decolonization of Anthropology. Main research looked at the development of Indigenous Research Methodologies to advance Indigenous worldviews in research and the academies around the globe.
