About Waskwayak Innovations

 Waskwayak, meaning Birch Trees in the Nêhiyaw language, was created from the understanding that knowledge is built through observation, relationship, adaptation, and innovation. Within Nêhiyaw teachings, the Birch Tree has long represented one of the most versatile and important sources of knowledge, providing practical uses through shelter, medicine, transportation, art, communication, and survival. Its teachings remind us that knowledge is never static, but shaped continuously through our relationship with the world around us and our responsibility to one another.

As a framework, Waskwayak was built from these Nêhiyaw teachings and from the understanding that communities must continue responding to the changing realities of the world around them. The wisdom carried by our ancestors informs how we understand the present, while our lived experiences shape how we create stronger futures for those who come after us. Knowledge is carried across generations, but it also continues to evolve as communities adapt, build, and innovate in response to new challenges and opportunities.

While rooted in Nêhiyaw teachings, Waskwayak recognizes that Indigenous communities have always created knowledge through innovation, observation, and collective responsibility. Across governance, research, community development, storytelling, reconciliation, institutional change, and emerging technologies, Indigenous communities have continuously built solutions grounded in their own lived realities and visions for the future.

Waskwayak exists to carry these teachings forward by working with Indigenous communities, organizations, and institutions seeking to build futures grounded in their own lived realities, teachings, and collective responsibilities. Guided by the same framework development that shaped Waskwayak itself, this work supports communities in identifying their own principles, knowledge, and ways of understanding in order to create systems, institutions, and innovations that reflect who they are and the futures they seek to build.

Waskwayak Innovations is a small business that uses the teachings of the BIrch Tree to bring forward an Authentic Indigenous view of innovation and creativity. The Birch tree provided many uses that include traditional homes, Canoes, Medicines, Art and uses like baskets.
